Campus Plan Model

The campus plan is recommended as an ideal design to reduce the institutionalization of schools. Large schools (student density - 1000 + students per school) have been shown to experience more discipline problems than small schools,while student achievement tends to be lower in large, high density schools.

A model school, shown below, suggested by SDPL associates was designed and constructed by Lawrence Stueck. The model represents a school for 400 students (PK - 5 or a middle school). This campus model includes eight "school houses" and requires 5 acres for the buildings (41,658 sq. ft. of heated space) It also requires 25-acres for fields and parking.  As proposed, the school complex resembles a community and SDPL estimates that construction costs are equal to the traditional institutionalized complex (Compared on a cost per student basis). A "Tiny Town" outdoor learning environment for elementary schools may be included.  Covered walkways are shown (672 linear feet).
